Established in 1993 by Todd McEwen to support writers throughout North East
Scotland, Lemon Tree Writers meet regularly in Aberdeen to organise readings,
workshops and retreats and primarily to discuss new writing. Previous Lemon Tree
Writers have included Siân Preece, Leila Aboulela and
Peter Burnett, and the group has been chaired by Roddy Lumsden, Eddie
Gibbons, Michel Dudropt, David Nicol, Haworth Hodgkinson,
Judith Taylor, Aidan Mulkerrin and, since August 2007, Gráinne
Smith.
As a group, Lemon Tree Writers perform regularly at the Aberdeen Arts Carnival,
at Word, the University of Aberdeen Writers' Festival, and at
wordfringe, the festival of new writing for Aberdeen and North-East
Scotland. The group also appeared at the Pennan Arts Festival in 2003.
In 2001, Lemon Tree Writers collaborated with Spotlight Theatre in
Inverurie to write and produce a two act play,
Soul Traders.
Lemon Tree Writers have produced to date four colections of writing. Left
to Write is long out of print, but the others, all featuring the distinctive
cover art of Helen Elizabeth Ramsey, are available from local bookshops or
at any Lemon Tree Writers event.
