¡Canto vivo!
Claire Debono (soprano)
Simon Thacker (guitar)

¡Canto vivo! features the stunning voice of Maltese soprano Claire Debono and virtuoso playing of Scottish guitarist Simon Thacker. Guitar and voice is one of the most intimate, sensuous and affecting combinations and ¡Canto vivo! have been delighting audiences for over seven years.

Claire Debono will be appearing at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Opéra de Toulon, Glyndebourne Festival and Teatro Real (Madrid) in the coming season. Recent highlights include: Edinburgh International Festival (with Emmanuelle Haïm), Vespina in Haydn's L'infedelta delusa, Festival d'Aix en Provence; Carnegie Hall (New York) with Les Arts Florissants; Virgin Classics CD release and European and New York tour, including acclaimed performances at the Lincoln Centre, New York, and London Barbican in the Great Performers Series, with William Christie; Despina (Cosi Fan Tutte) for Opéra de Lyon; Concert Spirituel tour with Les Arts Florissants, including performances at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, and London Barbican; Zerlina (Don Giovanni) for Théâtre Royale de la Monnaie on their tour of Japan; Ilia (Idomeneo) with Les Arts Florissants, European and New York tour; Barbarina (Figaro) for English National Opera; EMI CD release of Purcell (***** BBC Music Magazine); Windsor Castle by invitation of HRH The Prince of Wales.

By far the best singing of the evening was Claire Debono's sensitive, colorful and gracefully embellished account of Ilia's music.
(New York Times, Lincoln Centre performance with Les Arts Florissants)

Claire Debono [...] thoroughly charming [...] had a masterly control of her vocal line, the words, and the stage space.
(The New York Sun)

Since graduating with an MMus with Distinction from the RSAMD in 2003 Simon Thacker has established a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting classical musicians. He was recently nominated for the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Music Award, the highest recognition for live classical music-making in the United Kingdom, and in 2006 was the winner of the 50th Park Lane Group Young Artist Awards, resulting in his solo Purcell Room debut. The premiere performance of innovative solo tour programme The Alternative Guitar in 2007 at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh for ECAT was acclaimed with a five star review in The Scotsman. He has performed in Cuba, toured the UK several times and broadcast solo on Cuban TV and BBC Radio 3 with Paragon at the Edinburgh International Festival. Simon is Head of Guitar at Napier University. He is the founder of unique crossover project Camerata Ritmata and will be leading his innovative nine piece East/West group The Nava Rasa Ensemble on tour next year.

Thacker [...] is now one of the UK's leading classical guitarists — and, as well as having the instrumental mastery to play demanding pieces with apparent ease, boasts a disarmingly natural and entertaining presentational style.
(Glasgow Herald)

¡Canto vivo! performances include: BBC Radio 3, In Tune; BBC Radio Scotland; BBC Northern Ireland, Arts Extra; Ambassadorial Concert, Malta's National Theatre; St Luke's LSO, London; Summer Music at Paxton House; St James Piccadilly, London.

A privilege to hear (The Scotsman)
A consummate double act (Glasgow Herald)
Dazzling (The List)
